New Crime

I finally found out what the "Criminal Mischief greater than $1500" that showed up on the Crimemapping website was.  Turns out it is the theft of a brand new central AC unit from the house that was recently redone.  Unit hadn't even been turned on yet.  Happened around the 4th of July at 3231 Culver.  Owners assume they came down the alley and the theft occurred early morning about 5:30.  The owner has replaced it and put an iron cage over it.   The unit is on the side of the house in plain view and when the crime happened the neighbor on that side was gone.

One wonders if classifying it as Criminal Mischief is the Police Department's way of making the crime rate appear less serious.  This is plain old theft.

Our perp who is on parole is back in the neighborhood and he or one of his cronies on the bicycle has been seen in the alley casing.

We have also been finding parts of a golf cart strewn up and down the street.  Probably was stolen and on a joyride.
Be careful out there.

Your questioning if the label makes the crime seem less serious is a good one. Isn't a theft of over $1,000 grand larceny? And isn't a grand larceny of over $1,500 a felony? I would think a typical compressor (installed) would be in excess of $1500 - shouldn't a felony be labeled more than "criminal mischief"?
